Saying Bye to my TJ Empty Saying Bye to my TJ

Post  TJmike91 1/3/2013, 3:38 pm

Its time for me to say goodbye to Sammy, my 1997 TJ. I couldn't keep up with her maintenance anymore so I took advantage of lawless (teehee) and their desperate need for end of month quotas and bought a brand new 2012 sport.

Im gonna miss Sammy but at least now i wont be afraid to play and worry that something will rust and fall off...oh wait that already happened a few times. So now ill have this V6 instead of my 4banger and itll be ready to hit the snow probably tomorrow.

I dunno i just had to post about it. Its like sending a kid off to school and bringing a new one home. *shrugs*

Haha im already getting expensive ideas. I was surprised how high it was compared to my 97 stock. I need to do some research to see how big its stock tires are, what it can take initially w/o a lift that wont rub the wheel wells and of course pricing an eventual lift.

You can run 33s stock. Either that or look for some Rubicon takeoffs. They are 32s.

I am *very* jealous of the drivetrain, ha ha.

I'll give you the same advice I gave you with the TJ....

Armor and strength mods first, *then* lift and tires. (Ok, maybe tires first, as those street tires *suck*).

But get some decent skid plates and some Rubi/Islander/Mountain tires and wheels (alloy with Mud Terrains) will get you pretty far without needing to break and replace a ton and spend oodles and oodles of money chasing problems.

Ask Ryan (Chile Pepper) how much fun it is when you lift and add bigger tires without upgrading the rest of your system..... lol!

Hey now, I resent that Cool . I put in an HP30/8.8, re-geared, new tie rod and drag link, new sway bars, and disc brakes on all 4 corners when I put on 35s. Compared to some/most that put them on, it was actually a decently prepared rig for the tire sizes.

Alot of people put on a minimum dollar lift and they can't understand why it broke so fast.
You are way ahead of them Ryan..
It's too bad that alot of newbees do the live and learn thing when lifting a jeep or any vehicle for that matter. I did it.
Have to do home work first so you don't waste money and time.

True. I forget that most of that was *part* of the process of 35s, and not a reaction. The axles, especially.

Luckily, JK axles are just fine as is! One less upgrade needed!

The only guidance i got from the dealer is that the computer senses something when its activated that controls braking and other aspects so that the operator only focuses on steering going down steep grades.

Check these out. I hope they help.

Link 1
Link 2

Hill Descent Control (HDC) – If Equipped

HDC is only intended for low speed off-road driving. HDC maintains vehicle speed while descending hills in off-road driving conditions by applying the brakes when necessary.

The symbol indicates the status of the Hill Descent Control (HDC) feature. The lamp will be on solid when HDC is armed. HDC can only be armed when the transfer case is in the “4WD LOW” position and the vehicle speed is less then 30 mph (48 km/h). If these conditions are not met while attempting to use the HDC feature, the HDC indicator light will flash on/off.

When enabled, HDC senses the terrain and activates when the vehicle is descending a hill. HDC speed may be adjusted by the driver to suit the driving conditions. The speed corresponds to the transmission gear selected.

Gear Approximate HDC Set Speed
1st 1 mph (1.5 km/h)
2nd 2.5 mph (4 km/h)
DRIVE 7.5 mph (12 km/h)
REVERSE 1 mph (1.5 km/h)

However, the driver can override HDC operation by applying the brake to slow the vehicle down below the HDC control speed. If more speed is desired during HDC control, the accelerator pedal will increase vehicle speed in the usual manner. When either the brake or the accelerator is released, HDC will control the vehicle at the original set speed.

Enabling HDC

Shift the transfer case into 4WD LOW range. Refer to “Four-Wheel Drive Operation” in “Starting and Operating” for further information.
Press the “Hill Descent” button. The “Hill Descent Control Indicator Light” in the instrument cluster will turn on solid.
Note: If the transfer case is not in 4WD LOW range, the “Hill Descent Control Indicator Light” will flash for five seconds and HDC will not be enabled.

Disabling HDC

Press the “Hill Descent” button or shift the transfer case out of 4WD LOW range. The “Hill Descent Control Indicator” light in the instrument cluster will turn off.
