Post  Rjcinelli 12/19/2013, 11:24 am

Just figured I should start a build thread so I can keep track of what has been done to the Jeep and what I do. I bought this 95 Jeep YJ back in August after my bmw got totaled. I picked this one because of the condition and price. The PO has done a lot of the work to get it to the condition it is in now (frame off resto) so I lucked out with that part. I am planning on running some 33's or 35's soon after the holidays. Just ordered some parts that I won't get for a while. Enough talking, here are the pictures I have right now. If you want to know more about it just let me know! I'll have plenty of questions for you guys

Rob's 95 YJ Empty Tires regearing axles oh my...

Post  Rjcinelli 12/19/2013, 11:30 am

I've been wanting to upgrade to some bigger tires, the 31's are just to small and look silly with a 4" lift. I'm debating on 33's or 35's, from what I understand if I went with 33's, I wouldn't NEED to regear. I can get some for a decent price ($200) on rims, but I feel like once I get 33's I would not be satisfied and want 35's. With 35's I would need to regear to 4.88 atleast, which is the lowest I can go with the stock axles. I know that I should swap the rear axle though to an 8.8 or dana 44. Any suggestions, advice, etc? Tell me if I'm wrong with any of this, I invite criticism. I do drive the jeep daily, but have a spare car when needed.

Post  Andrew Miller 12/19/2013, 12:12 pm

Nice meeting you out there on Saturday, the Jeep looked great!

If you have the money for upgrades, I'd say go for the 35's. If money is a little tight go for those 33's, just be careful you don't chew up your clutch while off-road. Also with 33's your power will decrease a little and hills will suck. You will also spend a little more on gas. But if that is your only option right now, it is doable. Just my .02

Your Jeep would look great on 35's though.

Your Jeep would look great on 35's though.[/quote]  True Andrew, they all look better with 35's

It has a 4 Cylinder with 410's in it now I presume.
You could just leave the gearing for now and put some 33's on it, especially if they are cheap.
For the most part we wheel in 4 low so you will still have some power.
I have a 4 cyl yj with an, 8.8 and 410s, kind of a beater but It has a 3 1/2--4 in lift that i'm putting 33's on.
It's the body lift that adds to making yours kinda look bare in the wheel wells too.
If you have a dana 35 in the rear then 33's is kinda the limit and if you are rough on it you are more likely to snap an axle, Been there done that.
Ideally, score a 44 or an 8.8, but you wiil probably be better off installing an 8.8 with 410's, (super beefy) and it should be alot easier and less expensive to acquire than a 44 plus most 8.8s have disc brakes .
Try it out on 33's for a while and get more familiar with how the rig performs,, used 33's,, cheap upgrade.
MY 02 TOO, LOL,

Rob's 95 YJ Empty Thanks guys

Post  Rjcinelli 12/19/2013, 4:54 pm

Okay so for now I think I'm going to get the 33's since I can probably sell my 31's with the spare for $200 and make my money back? I'm going to be on the look out for an 8.8 rear, now with the 8.8 do they come with 4.10 gears or could I take the 4.10 gears from my d35 out and put them in the 8.8? Is there anything else I should be looking for while saving for the 8.8? What is a decent price range for an 8.8 just so I don't get ripped off when I decide to get one. Thanks for the suggestions and info guys, it was great meeting you too. It's nice to have a forum with people that are local

Good to meeting you also Rob and yes local is best place to start for info, trends etc.
Rob, you can't use anything from the 35 as it is completely different than the 8.8.
You need to do a bit of online research to get to know what is needed / involved with the swap.
You need to get one from a ford explorer, and yes they do come in different gear ratios, 410 included and some are limited slip.
A couple hundred give or take at the salvage yard should get you one.
You need to get a slip yoke eliminator kit, a drive shaft, new u bolts, spring perches, shock brackets etc.
It's not like gee does it fit, it fits and has been done many times before.
Some salvage yards let you pull it yourself, that way you can save a few bucks.
Car world, AKA, lkq auto parts in Candia NH has good prices and every so often they have half price week ends on you pull it parts.

Alright I didn't think you could but figured I would ask so I could get a definite answer. Thanks for this info, I will research about it all and hopefully be able to get started in January with this part. I'll definitely keep my eye open for that salvage yard, I've only been to jack's in Billerica.

Don't rush it, do research, collect your parts, you still have the dana 35 that you can wear out in the meantime.

Speaking as a YJ owner who has semi-rebuilt an 8.8 already set up for a YJ, I'd also urge you to take a look at the ones from East Coast Gear Supply.

http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-4764225-ford-8-8-rear-axle-bolt-in-yj-assembly.html
(Holy crap, they've gone down in price even mor)

They seem super pricey at first, but by the time you add up all the bits and pieces it actually often ends up being the economical solution, *especially* if it involves a regear or adding a locker.

Here's my thread on freshening up my 8.8
https://northshorejeeps.forumotion.com/t100-axle-build
(Goldanging Facebook!  Stop changing the pictures URLS!  I need to fix that.)
All the photos are in this album:

I just need to correct the links.

Edit: OK, I suck, that was for my Dana 30. I can't find my thread on the 8.8
Most of it can be found on my Jeepforum thread : http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f22/my-other-jeep-jeep-crawlingforwards-jeep-related-adventures-1192182/index3.html#post12749348

Just ran across this. Looks like a great start for an 8.8 swap if you can weld up the mounts yourself, or find a shop that can do it for you.

That does look good, I wish I could pick that up but unfortunately it's to soon for me to spend more money on the Jeep, with Christmas just passed and the New Year, my girlfriends anniversary and taxes to pay...  Sad

Good news and bad news, good news is my Christmas parts finally came, gotta weld them and put em on...I have to learn how to weld first. Bad news is my passenger side front brake caliper seems to have froze up, anybody know what they go for new? Or should I try to get one used? Thanks, I'll post pictures of the parts when I get home.

Eh, they're not too bad. I think $60 minus a $30 core? (I could be pulling it out of my butt). Definitely replace both a once if you do.

You can try taking it off and see if the pins are frozen. You might just be able to relubricate them.

Hey Rob, 20 dollars per caliper At auto zone.
Just replace both of them at the same time otherwise you are asking for trouble down the road.
Don't forget to purchase a quart of brake fluid.

Rob's 95 YJ Empty Finally some updates

Post  Rjcinelli 2/12/2014, 2:36 pm

So I've been trying to get as much done as possible in the past month or so. As of right now, I finished my brake job, ended up replacing my passenger side steering knuckle too. I brought my new bumper and rock sliders to my buddys shop and had them fab it all together and weld them. Got it back the next day and primed them/painted them. I used the bedliner in a can since that is what I used on my windshield brackets. I'm pretty satisfied with it so far. I am working on getting a winch and some bigger tires now. I may be trading my tires for some 35" tires. This is the link on CL http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/pts/4321829501.html Guy seems nice, he's in the marines and willing to give me gas money as well to drive out to him. I need to figure out what backspacing his wheels are so I will know if I need spacers for temporary use until I could get other rims. Does anyone have input on 35's with a d35 rear and stock gearing for the 4cyl 5 speed... I know it's not the best thing in the world. Hope you're all having a good safe winter. Can't wait to get out on the trails again. Here are some pictures with the new parts.

I'm not an expert, but that sounds like a bad combo for 35's.. Most people say 33 max on the D35. Stock gearing with a 4 cylinder also sounds like trouble.. Might be time to think about an axle upgrade

Yeah I have been thinking about an axle swap for a while just need to work more so I can afford that, I'm considering the 35's because I can trade mine straight up for them. I've heard people say its do-able and some people hate it.. just looking to see if anyone here has done it.
