What is this? A little help please

Have a question about something in my engine. Please don't laugh as I am totally new to this. Any help would be great! I have an arrow pointing to the part in question.

Air Intake. Apparently the PO put a mesh filter over it to avoid having particles go into the system. Unnecessary, as there is a large paper filter just inside the large box that intake is attached to.

So is this something that is normal on jeeps or was this a mod? Thanks for the response!

The mesh was a "mod" by whoever owned it before you. It is not required, nor is it doing any good (or harm) to the system.

That's just there to keep the boulders out, LOL. Get rid of it . Like RYAN said' it is doing no good.

Its to create that real "whoooshing" sound when you open up the throttle...

I'd bet the Jeep was previously stored or sat for a period of time. The previous owner prolly put that there to keep critters or bee's out of the air box. My grandfather used to do that on the car's when he left for vacation. lol

Yup, this.

I've seen enough mouse nests in airboxes built in only a few days time to appreciate it. If you don't have mice issues, probably not needed. But like they've said...not really doing any harm either.
